Case Description
I had a crown placed I believe incorrectly, causing my bite and jaw alignment to be misaligned slightly. It was placed unsupervised by a dental assitant. I have had a sore/ache in my jaw hinge and headaches since the crown was placed. I used to wear a night guard, and now it won't fit around the side of my mouth where the crown is. I have tried twice to get my current dentist to listen to me, but he refused to do anything to correct the crown. Last time he was rather unprofessional towards me. I had braces as a child and my bite is important to me. I can feel my teeth shifting as the crown is trying to adjust. I'd just like a new dentist or orthodontist, and correction of the problem, as the soreness and headaches are unbearable. Thank You.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

You are smart to seek out a different dentist. Occlusal discrepancies should be adjusted immediately to prevent long term damage to the tooth and trauma to your jaw joints. Even the smallest problem with the way you bite on a crown can be a huge nuisance. I will be glad to help you. You may call my office at 702-372-4039 or register for an appointment online at www.moderndentallv.com

Jennilee,

Your problem is very common and usually easily treated. Your existing nightguard would probably be easily fitted around the new crown or a new guard could be made. I usually make one called an NTI and I think it is the best for relieving the symptoms you describe. I''''ll take a look at you free of charge if you''''d like. The crown needs to be adjusted until it feels like it is not even there. Othodontics is not the answer and most people would benefit from a bite adjustment even after braces.

You should try again to have the dentist look at the crown to make sure that it was seated correctly. Make sure they take a bitewing x-ray of the tooth to show the fit. Ask for a copy of the x-ray. With this type of persistance they will make sure that the crowns placed in your mouth are properly fitted by the dentist only. If you can''''t get satisfaction try finding a dentist with his name on the building that actually sees the patients at that location. There are many fine dentists in town that do quality work in Las Vegas. If something seems amiss with your treatment at the office (assistants doing final cementations) there probably is a problem.
