Teeth whitening FAQs

By Mark Edington DDS, Las Vegas, NV.

Frequently asked questions about tooth whitening

  1. Does whitening/ bleaching ruin the teeth?

No.  A recent study shows that 3 months after bleaching the enamel in a bleached tooth is the same as untreated enamel.  With some of the more expensive whitening gels, there may even be a benefit to the strnght of the enamel with the addition of calcium and fluoride.

       2.   Will whitening my teeth make them sensitive?

Sensitivity is common with bleaching (experienced by about 20% of patients).  This usually goes away with 24 hours.  If it persists, we can help you by placing a desensitizing sealer to block the pores of your teeth.

       3.   What is "laser" bleaching?

"Laser" bleaching involves the use of a high intensity light to activate a whitening chemical on your teeth.  Significant results can be expected within an hour for most patients.  A new whitening gel "Opalescence Boost" has been formulated that eliminates the need for light activation with at  least as good or better whitening results.  Without a hot lamp in front of your face, you are free to enjoy television in one of our comfortable Kavo ultraleather chairs.

        4.   What are bleaching trays?

A bleaching tray is a custom formed plastic shell that fits over your teeth.  Bleaching gel is placed inside the trays and worn over night or for 1-2 hours during the day.  Significant results are seen within 2 weeks of wearing the trays.

        5.   Why shouldn't I just by a whitening product at the local pharmacy or online?

I encourage my patients to go ahead and try these products, but most people interested in whitening their teeth end up coming back to me for a more powerful professional treatment.  You may be wasting your money on these products, especially considering you are going to end up wanting professional results.  Also, it is not wise to proceed with whitening until after a complete exam of your mouth and teeth.

        6.   Do I have to pay for a complete exam, when all I want is teeth whitening?

Modern Dental Care offers a free consultation (no longer than 5 minutes with doctor).  We can determine from the consultation and limited exam if you are a candidate for professional teeth whitening.  If you have had regular dental checkup appointments and cleanings with no obvious cavities we can proceed with whitening treatment without performing a complete exam.  Of course, we hope that you will come back and see us soon for the complete exam.  We recommend regular checkup exams and professional teeth cleaning every 6 months!
